PhD Archaeology
Welcome to my academic website. It is an attempt to provide a single place to share all my scholarly undertakings.
I was born (1978) in Ghent, Belgium, where I graduated (2002) and received my PhD degree (2009) in Archaeology. From 2010 to 2013, I held a part-time professorship.
Since 2010, I have been living and working in Vienna, Austria. I first joined the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection & Virtual Archaeology (LBI ArchPro) as a senior researcher and served as its vice-director between 2021 and 2023. From 09-2021 to 08-2023, I coordinated the academic graffiti project INDIGO. From 01 April 2026 onwards, I will coordinate its successor project, INDIGO 2.0.
In October 2023, I started a full-time position as a senior scientist at the University of Vienna. Besides research, I continue to teach the course I initiated in 2017: photography and image-based 3D modelling for heritage purposes. In 2025, I additionally began teaching Photography for Archaeologists, further expanding my engagement with methodological training in heritage documentation.
I do not have any special talent. I am only passionately curious about:

I do not have any special talent. I am only passionately curious about:
- imaging & image processing
- image-based 3D surface modelling
- spatio-temporal + semantic data structuring & reasoning
- scientific visualisation
- colourimetry
- statistics
My endeavours in these fields aim to improve data acquisition, data management and information extraction procedures for the benefit of archaeology and cultural heritage at large. My work is also guided by the words of the philosopher John Dewey (1859-1952):
≪ Theory without practice is empty. Practice without theory is blind. ≫
